American Girl in Chelsea

A chic guide for American women who have relocated to London, England.

Moving? Use these movers….

May 4, 2011 | 5 Comments

I’ve done my fair share of flat bouncing since we’ve been in London, and I have had some absolutely terrible experiences with movers, otherwise known as man and van dudes. To be honest, this is unlike the experiences that my friends have in the United States. For instance, one of my friends living in Connecticut had to recently relocate due to some personal reasons. She had to relocate in a haste. However, she did not seem to have faced any issues in finding a company that can provide her Moving Services. All she had to perhaps do was look for one on the Internet and contact them. Upon relocating, she updated me that the moving services appeared to be at par with her expectations. To be honest, though I was happy that she did not have to experience any hiccups during relocating, I felt a tinge of sadness that I never get hold of such moving companies.

In fact, my experiences have been that bad that I researched buying my own van for my last move. Sounds crazy, but the cost of a second-hand van with cheap van insurance private use only didn’t actually cost that much. Plus, I could always sell the van afterwards. In the end, it turned out that it was going to be a lot more expensive that way, but the fact I even thought about it shows how bad my experiences have been.

I kid you not, during one of our flat moves, at which point I was exactly 8 1/2 months pregnant, the man carrying a box of my hanky pankys dropped the whole entire thing in the middle of the road. I swear to you. It happened. A crazy pregnant lady then went running down the street screaming for him to help me pick them up! They also scratched my brand-new crib that had just arrived from the US.

So in order to spare you the same suffering, I would like to suggest Gentleman and a Van. Mark, one of the owners, came out to my old flat and gave me a very competitive quote (I also had three other companies quote me, all silly bananas expensive.) He then arranged for three lovely guys to come and pack everything up, move it the next day, and unpack it the next. The guys were so sweet and were so helpful, leaving just the right amount of clothing and food unpacked and readily accessible so that we were not inconvenienced. I would highly recommend them.

Gentleman and a Van also has storage units and can basically handle any of your moving needs!

Ha! What a great name. So much better than Two Guys and a Truck or something blah like that. Thanks for the recommendation!

Haha, agree with the above comment – I used Starving Students back in LA. London is definitely a step up from that. Cheers!
