When I worked in New York in my early twenties, I had my first face-to face encounter with the dark, sombre, no-nonsense American Business Women. Impeccably tailored, with a blow dry to rival K-Middy’s, I quickly realised you AGs were clearly a powerful force not to be reckoned with in the boardroom! A far cry from your English counterparts who may make the effort to get their one and only suit dry cleaned once a month, but then again might not.
So, if you struggle to know what to wear to the office everyday, here are my top 5 style tips on British Dress Code Rules:
No Matchy Matchy
It is the one thing I know drives you AGs insane and that is our dislike for matching colours together. You view it as messy, we view it as innovative! Go with the flow and just try wearing different shade shoes. I promise the other girls in the office will compliment you!
Dress to Success
Ditch the 2-piece suit. British women love to look and feel like women. Fitted, softly tailored knee length dresses that work a neat little blazer being thrown over for diving in and out of meetings.
We love our accessories for funkyfying our work wear and giving it some personality as well as saving us some cash. Belts and necklaces mean we can transform a simple dress and wear it several time in one week without people noticing.
Well Trained
Unfortunately we Brits don’t take our fitness quite as seriously as you workaholic AGs so wearing any kind of sportswear to and from the office is a no-no, especially trainers. We wear ballet pumps to tackle escalators and long tube walks.
Dress Down Fridays
You probably consider everyday at the office a dress down in comparison to back home and Fridays as a day of fancy dress! If in doubt, wear dark jeans and a pretty blouse with heels. (It’s a city staple outfit)
A huge thanks to Clare from Miss Dress for the great advice.
